Ferry Road, Waipu
Archaeological work for subdivisions is a core aspect of our business. Recently Horizon Archaeology were approached by Dempsey Wood to carry out an archaeological assessment of Three Rivers Estate, a 56 lot subdivision on Ferry Road, Waipu.
There were no recorded archaeological sites on the land, but shellfish midden was found during construction activity. Horizon Archaeology carried out an assessment of the property, which found further shell and, based on the subdivisions position near where the Ahuroa and Waihoihoi Rivers join to become the Waipu, concluded more was likely. We recommended Dempsey Wood apply for an archaeological authority from Heritage New Zealand, which was later granted.
With the help of members of the local hapu we investigated the known midden and wider area, finding clear evidence of previously unknown Māori camps in the area. At the completion of the investigation reporting was provided to Heritage New Zealand; and further development of the property can now proceed.
